Who are scottee+
friends?
We are a collective of fat, queer, common, femme and neurododiverse artists, producers and participants who are mates.
We make theatre, performance, digital and community stuff about the conversations we tend to ignore - class, fatness, queerness, access, mental health and more.
Our work aims to help the underrepresented and marginalised take up more space and be louder - to gather, take action and address injustice.
Our work is often loud, provocative and kind to those we think deserve it. Come have a laugh with us, watch our stuff and get involved.
Our work
Scottee + Friends make work that is political, provocative and participant led - we hope it empowers, advocates for and supports the communities we work with, specifically those who experience ostracisation because of their class, gender, sexuality, bmi or mental health.
We tour theatre across the UK and beyond, a lot of this work starts in Manchester as we are an Associate Company at HOME. Our activism and community programmes are at the heart of all of our work. For the past seven years we’ve worked with communities across Peterborough, before that working in Southend on Sea and St. Helens.
Our work has been featured on the telly and in the papers including Guardian, Vice, Sky TV, BBC Radio 4, Independent to name a few. Alongside this it has received 4 and 5 star reviews, a UK Theatre Award nomination and two Total Theatre Awards. To date the company have published three books - these include two stage plays and a retrospective - so we think we’re doing quite well, actually.
how it all started
The company was set up by two mates, our Creative Directors Molly Nicholson and Scottee. They started by putting on cabaret and variety shows in working mens clubs, tenant association halls, music festivals and the occasional theatre. Selling used eyelashes to pay the bills and working from disused car parks in the bottom of tower blocks in East London.
In 2017 they founded Scottee & Friends Ltd. to better support their ambition to create an radical organisation that could help them kick in the back door of the arts. In 2018, Matty May joined us as Associate Director supporting everything we make, say and do.
The company operates as a collective who collaborate with a wide range of artists, producers, companies and participants.
